ABOUT

Matt is a political philosopher at the University of San Diego who teaches and writes about issues at the intersection of ethics, law, and economics. As a "bleeding heart libertarian", he is interested in finding ways to reconcile a commitment to individual freedom and limited government with a concern for social justice and the less fortunate.

Toward that end, he recently co-authored several books. The first, written with John Tomasi, is called The Individualists: Radical, Reactionaries, and the Struggle for the Soul of Libertarianism, and is an intellectual history of libertarianism from its origins in the 19th century to the present day, with a special focus on the tensions within libertarian though between more progressive and more conservative elements.

The second, written with Miranda Fleischer, is called Universal Basic Income: What Everyone Needs to Know. This book sets out to explain this fascinating and controversial policy idea for a general audience, and tries to show why it has appealed to so many people on both the left and right of the political spectrum.
